THE MUGDOWN

Branding | Web Design | Digital Signage

The Mugdown is Texas A&M University’s first long running satire organization. The Mugdown was founded by students of the University to challenge the thinking of the Texas A&M community by delivering relevant satirical news. It is run by current students of the University as a primarily web-based publication, although they frequently branch out into live events and various forms of media including print, theatrical productions, YouTube, podcasts, and social media.

Early in their development, they required an identity and website to bring the publication to life. After their first year establishing themselves, the organization had grown tremendously and was ready for an updated and redesigned website.

MY ROLE

I was a founding member and the organization’s first Editor-in-Chief. In addition to overseeing all content produced by The Mugdown, I was in charge of developing the website, managing content, and establishing the brand.

LOGO DESIGN

With the creation of what would become Texas A&M’s longest-running source of satirical news, a logo was needed. What was chosen was a logo that could link The Mugdown to deep university ties with a non-traditional inversion of expectations. The Mugdown’s upside-down coffee cup has since been used for years to evoke feelings of warmth, energy and above all, a sense of smug superiority as readers sip their skinny almond milk lattes while chuckling softly to themselves at The Mugdown’s biting social commentary.

SPACE JAM 2

Comically photoshopped pictures of fabricated news are posted daily on The Mugdown’s website. However, this false ad was the reverse. Inspired by rumors that had crept their way onto the university’s campus, the ad was designed to fan the flames. It’s a simple call to Johnny Manziel’s signature hand sign mirrored by the iconic gloved hand of Bugs Bunny.

EVAN AFTER HOURS

The Mugdown finished the 2014-2015 school year by joining the Texas A&M University Libraries in their second annual joint venture. Together, they hosted a surreptitious party held in a library study room promoted exclusively through social media. Spinning off the secretive nature of the event, the second party was given a new coat of paint: a swanky speakeasy.
